A Visit from the Secretary of the Interior

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell recently visitedPueblo Grande Museum on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Secretary Jewell was in Phoenix to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Land and Water Conservation Fund created by Congress in 1965. The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) was a bipartisan commitment to safeguard natural areas, water resources, our cultural heritage, and to provide recreation opportunities to all Americans.


ThePhoenix Parks Foundation, Mayor Greg Stanton, and Phoenix Parks and Recreation Director James Burke hosted a press conference with Secretary Jewell at South Mountain Park, which can be seen on the Phoenix TV 11 YouTube Channel. The Secretary also visited other Phoenix parks, including a co-hosted a luncheon for Secretary Jewell at Pueblo Grande Museum.


While at the Museum, Museum Assistant Laura Andrew and Museum Director Roger Lidman gave Secretary Jewell, Assistant City Manager Lisa Takata, Parks Director James Burke, Deputy Parks Director Ken Vonderscher, and others a tour of the museum, interpretive trail, and museum collections.


Secretary Jewell enjoyed the visit to Phoenix and the opportunity to tour Pueblo Grande Museum.  Also, while speaking at the press conference, Secretary Jewell announced $738,000 in grants to nine Native American tribes, including two in Arizona, to help them develop energy industries.
