Trading Posts and Native Arts of the Navajo and Hopi Tour

The artistic creations of the Navajo and Hopi are world renowned and the evolution of their native arts has been strongly linked to the trading posts. Trading Posts on the Navajo and Hopi reservations served as a cultural connection between these Native People and the outside world.  Besides serving as the social and economic centers for many of the Navajo and Hopi communities, trading posts have been central to the growth of the Native art forms themselves. One of the best ways to discover the culture and art of the Navajo and Hopi reservations is by visiting trading posts as we'll do on this tour. Along the way, we will also enjoy the unique experience of participating in a weaving auction as well as stop by various historical and cultural institutions along the way.

Tour Itinerary April 29 – May 5, 2015, Led by Peter Booth, Ph.D.

Day One: Fly into Grand Junction

• Tour Grand Junction Downtown and Museum of the West
• Night in Grand Junction

Day Two: South to Gallup

• Tec Nos Poos
• Toadlena Trading Post (Mark Winters)
• Night In Gallup

Day Three: Gallup to Window Rock

• Richardson’s Pawn Shop
• RB Burnham Trading Post at Chambers
• St Michaels Museum
• Window Rock (Museum and Tribal Council Building)
• Night at Window Rock

Day Four Hubbell to Canyon de Chelly

• Hubbell Trading Post
• Friends of Hubbell Rug Auction
• Canyon de Chelly (South Rim Tour)
• Holiday Inn (Garcia’s)

Day Five: Hopi to Tuba City

• Sunrise on rim of Canyon de Chelly, then on to Hopi
• Tsakurshovi Trading Post (Days) and Hopi
• Tuba City
• Night: Tuba City (Moenkopi Legacy Inn & Suites)

 Day Six: Home via Tuba City

• Tuba City Trading Post and Museum
• Gouldings
• Twin Rocks (Bluff) for lunch

Day Seven:

• Fly Home to Phoenix
